Neil is a Lord Kelvin Adam Smith Research Fellow in the School of Engineering. He works on sustainable and socially responsible development of energy and water resources.

He is an applied geoscientist with a strong track record in tackling geoenergy engineering challenges and has published articles on a range of earth science disciplines such as geochemistry, hydrology, geomorphology, structural geology and environmental science. He has worked on seismic activity investigations in Greece, man-made and natural carbon dioxide and methane seeps in the USA and Japan, groundwater monitoring of shale gas operations in Poland and the installation and implementation of experimental engineering equipment across the UK.

Neil leads UoG involvement in three international collaborations which investigate development, application and environmental impact of low carbon energy resources. Two of these focus on utilisation of shallow groundwater resources (such as flooded mine workings) for sustainable geothermal energy generation. He is Principle Investigator on a range of scoping projects under the Geothermal Understanding in Developing Economies (GUIDE) banner that investigate reconciliation of energy development and water resource management in areas under environmental and societal duress such as Kenya and Ethiopia.
