Transdisciplinary online course: Resources and Sustainability
This project is funded by DAAD and led by Prof Daniel Koehn, director of the Germany Hub. It is implemented in Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany), University of Eswatini (Eswatini), University of Glasgow (United Kingdom) and Makerere University (Uganda). The project is developing a postgraduate course (including self-contained modules) that will jointly offer trans-disciplinary, interconnected learning based on virtual collaboration during design, implementation and within the actual course. The course is targetting an interdisciplinary audience at Masters and PhD level and will be available either as full course or as modules within the curriculum of involved Universities and beyond.

Project Scope

In the project “Ethical Global Partnerships, Resources and Sustainability: virtual collaboration in an interdisciplinary and intercultural inverted classroom” Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany), the University of Eswatini (Eswatini) as well as the University of Glasgow (United Kingdom) and Makerere University (Uganda) are jointly developing trans-disciplinary, interconnected learning modules for a postgraduate course based on virtual collaboration during design, implementation and within the actual course. The final aims are to enhance digital and inter-cultural skills including geologic knowledge about the countries’ resources under the aspect of sustainability, across the cultures of tutors and students with a truly global virtual perspective; and to develop a best-practice case for the wider community.
The course development and tutor team are trans- and interdisciplinary with Earth-Sciences and Geography from Erlangen and Eswatini as well as Social Sciences and Education from Glasgow and Makerere. The topic of the course is based on (geogenic) resources, like the formation and exploitation of ore deposits and sustainability on the one hand, which is one of the main research and teaching topics at Erlangen and Eswatini, and on Ethical Global Partnerships on the other hand. The course will be developed for an interdisciplinary audience of Masters and PhD level and will be directly implemented either as full course or as modules within the curriculum of involved Universities
A close collaboration is essential in order to link the different modules and interconnect them to ensure learning in a sustainable approach. Especially through the Sustainable Futures Global network, it is expected that a successful design of the course modules will enhance further development and use of interdisciplinary and collaborative online course modules in a global perspective enhancing cultural and digital knowledge exchange for tutors and students.
